And by the 1990s, there was a big, thriving drag king scene in cities like New York City, San Francisco, and London - all over the world. And in the early 1900s, Go-won-go Mohawk was likely the first indigenous male impersonator.īy the early 1900s, black performers like Gladys Bentley and Stormé DeLarverie were becoming drag pioneers. All of these entertainers really inspired me when I started drag and keep inspiring me to create new things. In the mid-to-late 1800s, drag king pioneers like Annie Hindle, Vesta Tilley, and Ella Wesner began performing. My favorite drag kings are Landon Cider, King Molasses, Tyquan, Dusty Bahls, and Yur Unkle. He usually uses art and humor while performing. In China, documentation of “male impersonators” dates back to the Tang Dynasty, from 618 to 907 AD. Adam All is a UK drag king who has been performing for not less than 12 years. And these performers have been around for centuries. Put simply, a drag king is a female performance artist who dresses in masculine drag and embodies traits typically associated with men. A drag king is typically (though not always) an AFAB (assigned female at birth) performer dressing and creatively expressing themselves in an exaggerated masculine style. Drag kings are great, and put a lot of effort. Organizers of Toronto’s Kings and Classics show say drag king performances are more than just women dressed as men. In the words of King Molasses, drag is full of “that swag you get in the shower that nobody sees.” Drag king performances are all about playing with masculine identities: politicizing them, satirizing them, and having fun with them. Drag queens present a persona not traditionally allowed in public. We interviewed five drag kings about their relationships to drag, how the artform has transformed, and what they love about it. Drag kings have historically gotten a lot less attention than drag queens, but that’s starting to change.
